Day 59
This is Oliver
He’s now 13 months old and, as a result, he represents a huge chunk of my experience with Team One during my own first year and one half at the agency.
This is our living room, now mostly overrun with toys. Notice anything in particular?

It’s largely saturated with noise-making devices. See, Oliver loves music. He jumps up and down to the beat in his jumper whenever we play uptempo stuff. And, when there’s a gap between songs on a CD, he gets visibly upset.
In the mornings, before work, he frequently has me play guitar for him (in the background behind the chair) or the mouth harp (not visible, on the mantle) or the djembe drum (foreground). And he has a little ‘laptop’ that makes funny sounds when a button is pressed as well as that little standup table that has drum sounds; and a xylophone.
So, last Wednesday night, I thought to myself “What if I made a song from all of these noise making devices? What if I tried to make loops from all of the different real and many ‘plastic’ instruments? What if I did it in Garage Band (a program I’ve never used)?”
So that’s just what I did.
Some evidence:
Then, at about two in the morning, when I was done ‘recording’ I decided it would be even cooler to do a video using iMovie (another program I haven’t used much at all).
Finally, at about 4 in the AM on Thursday morning, I finished.
You’ll have to tell me what you think.
Consider this an ode to Oliver and to Team One during our collective first year together.
Enjoy!

Day 58
I come from a very “artsy” family but I just don’t seem to have that natural talent to paint a sunset, sketch people, quilt or create picture perfect murals.
Since I have always wanted to paint I decided why not give it a whirl?! My goal for the upcoming month of August is to try something new, which is paint and to learn how to paint well, so I thought I would start by showing you how to turn a wine glass into a work of art.
Painting glasses is a fun idea for gifts, themed dinner parties and even holidays. It is very simple and the best part is that you can be extravagant or simple as desired.
First I had to get my supplies; wine glasses, paint (enamel paint - preferably Art Folk Enamel), paint brushes, and rubbing alcohol.
To begin you wash the glasses with soap and water then dry off. Next you take a paper towel with rubbing alcohol on it and wipe the outside area of the glass, then let air dry. You then pour your paint colors onto a plate, i like to mix and blend my colors to have more of a color variety and to give the image more depth. Then start painting!
Make sure you use plenty of paint to cover the glass; it is harder to go back over top with more because if you mess with the same area too long the paint scratches away or becomes too chunky. I like to create depth with my colors by layering different shades on top of one another, letting the colors semi dry in between sets, which depending on what you choose to paint can also give it a more realistic look. After you complete your image let it sit and air dry for about 10 minutes. Then stick the glasses in your oven and then turn on to 350 degrees. You should leave the glasses in the oven for about 20 or 30 minutes, depending on how thick the glass is. After the oven time is up, do NOT remove the glasses. Turn off the oven and let them cool off in the cooling off oven. You must bake them in order to cure the paint so that the it dries properly and is less likely to scratch off. The glasses are now dishwasher safe on the top rack and also can be washed with warm water and soap, just don’t let them soak in water and do not scrub the outside of the glass.
Cheers to trying new things! Enjoy! :)

Day 56
We’ve realized that this industry moves incredibly fast. So while everyone’s busy with work work work, it can be hard to take the time to recognize and appreciate the people we interact with on a daily basis.
We wanted to get the whole agency involved in making each other smile—and what better way to do that than by sending “Thank Tank” Grams. Yes—4th grade style. We had a ton of fun putting this together (using recycled office paper as our key material), and hope that everyone enjoys reading their “Thank Tank” Grams.

Day 55
I’ve written a lot of country songs. Most of them are about hurting, lying and cheating, just like all good country songs. So, when my fiance, now my wife, asked me to write something a bit happier, maybe even a song for or about her, I was stumped. I had no roadmap for writing something that was, lyrically, happy. Humoring her, at first, I asked what she might call this upbeat song. Her answer: “You Found Me.” I liked it. The song title kind of stuck in my head. I tried to have this written and recorded in time for our wedding last year, as a surprise, but it took a little longer to get this one close to right. After years of reflecting upon pain, writing about happiness took some extra time. Go figure.
So, here it is now. A preview, and a demo recording, of a new country duet called, “You Found Me (When I Found You).” This one’s for Sally.

Ever wondered what you could create with a an iPhone and a Rubick’s Cube?
How about a new alphabet?
I made this in an hour on my dining room table.
Enjoy.

Day 53
On and off since I was a kid, my extended family has been meeting up for summer beach trips. Although I can’t quite remember how it happened, it was on one of these beach trips about four years ago that I learned of my somewhat random propensity for needlepointing (yes, I’m a guy, and yes, I know how to needlepoint). Every year since, during my time at the beach I pick up the hobby, head to my family’s and my favorite needlepoint shop (Pawley’s Island Needlepoint- I recommend it if you’re ever in SC) and see what creative images and items I can make- so far it’s been things ranging from school logos, names and initials, to lobsters and random designs.
This year during the trip, while trying to think of a new project, I got the email about 30 More Days of Creativity. So, I thought what better a way to show off some creativity and company spirit?
And for those of you who might actually know what I’m talking about, it’s: Continental, Basketweave, Straight Cashmere, and Scotch.

Day 52
My day of creativity was inspired by the blog ThingsWeForget.blogspot.com. Every day, its blogger writes a simple word of wisdom and complements the thought with a witty visual. She then posts these tidbits on telephone poles, elevators, and post office boxes around her hometown of Singapore.
I thought I’d follow in that vain by posting these images around Team One. Hopefully you were pleasantly surprised this morning to find the small square of paper outside of your office or on your computer screen. Maybe these scraps landed straight in the rubbish bin, or maybe they really did remind you about the things we forget in our hectic lives. Each one of you should have received a unique thought for the day!

Day 51
Strange internet sensations have always intersted me, from Youtube lipsinker Keenan Cahill, our favorite Honey Badger and recently planking! It all hit me one night when I watched Rosario Dawson plank on top of Jimmy Kimmel’s desk. I started to think of all the funny places I would like to plank at Team One. Right then, I decided to make my creative day centered around planking at Team One. The beauty of the idea was that I would ask co-workers to do the planking with me. I also pushed them to come up with their own planking locations, to grow the creative outside of just myself.
A few days last week, I recuited co-workers to plank and let me document them with a picture. Then using a bit of Instragram magic, I spiced up each picture to add a little edge. Lastly, using iMovie I put all the pictures into a video slide show and added some dramatic music. I hope you like it and laugh a little at our fun. I FULLY encourage everyone to try planking at least once, as it is alot more fun then it looks. Just be sure to be safe.
Thank you again for all that planked with me!

Day 49
When the recession hit, I, like most people, wanted to save money—not an easy task given that Christmas was just around the corner. I brainstormed ways to express thoughtfulness in my gifts without having to spend a pretty penny. One thing that I’ve always enjoyed was making crafts, so I thought I’d make my friends and family plush animals, ornaments, objects, etc.
I bought myself a book that thought me how to sew and had different cut-out patterns (cost me $10!). They were a hit and ever since 2008, I’ve been making plush objects like these pieces of poop!

Day 48
This project came to me in the strangest way. I was talking with a colleague about an annual event in Manhattan Beach, and during this conversation I (somehow) thought about these small containers we had stashed away with the seasonal party items in our garage. The containers (somehow) sparked the idea to create something that would yield small samples to share. Then (somehow) my mind jumped from food products to spa products and the idea for my project was born!
I created two kinds of sugar body scrubs. The base of both scrubs is the same - olive oil and sugar. In the first scrub I decided to include some orange oil and a little orange zest. In the second scrub I incorporated some fresh mint from my herb box along with a few drops of mint oil. Both smell fantastic, but the orange is a my personal favorite.
Please stop by my office and pick up a sample!

Day 47
One thing I admire most about the older women in my family is their ability to sew, crochet and pretty much do anything involving a needle and thread. These are skills I ultimately want to learn so I decided for my day of creativity I would learn how to embroider a baby gift for my best friend who is expecting. I went to Babies R’ Us to purchase baby items and then went to Michael’s to get embroidery thread, an invisible ink pen and an embroidery needle. I found a stencil online of a “C” for baby Corrine and I drew it onto a bib. I then embroidered the “C” in blue thread and my aunt helped me add flowers and leaves. Though this project took well over three hours to complete, it was tons of fun and I look forward to my next feats.
Up next- my grandmother will teach me how to crochet a baby blanket, booties and a baby cap.

Day 46
I’ve been eating sushi for about two years now, but a lot of my friends are not a fan. Therefore, I thought I’d make a sushi that everyone could enjoy … Dessert Sushi!
For the traditional ‘roll’ entrees, I made a thin batch of rice krispie treats (to symbolize the rice), bought a few ‘fillings’ (i.e. gummy worms!) rolled then inside, and used fruit roll-ups to secure everything (like the seaweed).
To symbolize Nigiri (raw fish over a block of rice) I took the leftover rice krispie treats and cut them into thin blocks. I laid a larger Swedish fish over the top, and once again wrapped it with fruit rollup. Voila! A sweet twist on a Japanese dish!

Day 45
My First Wave
The sensation of the sand between my toes makes me feel grounded more than ever. Looking out at the massive body of water that stands before me, I want to embrace it for all it’s beauty, yet there is an uneasy feeling lingering in my stomach. It’s as if I had been gut checked the night before.
As I slowly enter the massive ocean, losing my grip on the ground beneath me, a serenity begins to push the fear driven thoughts further from my mind. When, all of the sudden, I hear a distant voice through the crashing of the waves yelling to me, “This is your wave, paddle!”
I begin paddling with all my might as the water propels me forward. In my head I tell myself, just go through the motions. I am determined. I stand up and ride the collapsing gyre of water to shore. The feeling that rushes through my body is intense, it’s unlike any I have ever experienced. Bliss circulates through me, as I watch the swirling colors of the ocean surround me. Time is standing still, yet flying by. I am humbled and for a moment I realize how significant a butterfly flapping its wings really is.
This piece is a representation of what I felt in that moment, as I rode my first wave to shore.

Day 44
My sister awhile back start bugging me about being artsy again and to nudge me back into it she gave me a Sunprint Kit. I have been thinking about this kit lately and looking around my office I noticed that I have many things to use. Using the kit (which is relatively inexpensive), some left over confetti and my pop-up animal calendar I set to work. The main thing needed is sun, and lots of it. I just laid out the Sunprint paper on the window sill with the different objects on top. In a short amount of time (depending on how much sun there is) it is ready to be rinsed and hung up to show off. I have some more Sunprint paper at my desk if anyone wants to come down to 6 and check it out.
